Failed Outdoors Unhinged – The Road Hunter Podcast
In this episode of The Road Hunter Podcast, we try to stick to the plan, but between the laughs, wild tangents, and random stories, things go completely off the rails (in the best way possible). If you’re here for hunting talk and some unexpected entertainment, you’re in the right place. Buckle up for an unpredictable ride! This one wanders: from Failed Outdoors merch (Nicole’s cartoon characters turning into shirts and hats, one per crew member) to the weather finally breaking from blistering hot toward sweatshirt season. In the middle of all that, a real moment: two bears spotted crossing a hillside after a fresh thunderstorm, gone in under three seconds, followed shortly by something rustling in the trees behind us that was decidedly not a squirrel.
Salmon were holding at the mouth of the Columbia and doing well in the ocean, but the river itself was still skunk town: they needed a good rain to push the run upstream. If you’re chasing fall salmon, watch the rain gauge as much as the tide chart.
We’ll own this one: we pulled a trail camera off a spot the day before opening weekend because another truck was parked nearby and we didn’t want it stolen. Not great etiquette, but an honest tradeoff: a 40-minute drive each way versus risking the camera. Lesson for next season: plan camera pickups earlier than the night before opener.
Re-sight your rifle or bow, check boots and rain gear for damage from last season, and re-apply waterproofing treatments: the protective coating on rain gear wears off and needs to be reapplied periodically.
Cameras near public access points are at real risk of theft once hunting traffic picks up. Pulling them a few days ahead of opener, rather than the night before, gives you more flexibility if access gets crowded.
Thanks for riding along on this one even with all the tangents: we’ll get back on topic next episode. Probably.
