Archery season for Western Oregon elk opens August 29, and every camp conversation this week will circle back to the same question: what’s the weather going to do? The foundational thing to understand is that elk are considered crepuscular, meaning their activity concentrates around dawn and dusk, but GPS-collar research has found something more interesting underneath that pattern. In plain terms, elk activity isn’t locked to a rigid internal schedule the way some animals’ behavior is. For archery hunters, this is the single most actionable piece of science in this article. Late August and September in Oregon can still run warm, especially at lower elevations, and a hot stretch doesn’t just make elk less visible, it measurably shrinks the part of the day when they’re on their feet. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s own hot-weather guidance reaches the same practical conclusion from the field: when it’s pushing 90 degrees, consider scouting instead of grinding out a midday sit, and shift your effort to the edges of daylight when elk are actually willing to move.

Every hunter knows wind carries scent, but the more useful science is in how mountain wind actually behaves across a day, because it’s rarely as simple as “the wind is blowing north.” As the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation explains, cool morning air descends downslope, carrying scent down with it, and as the sun heats the terrain through the day, that flow reverses into an upslope thermal that continues for hours. That reversal, usually somewhere around mid-morning, is exactly why so many experienced elk hunters call it quits at midday, not because elk vanish, but because the wind becomes unpredictable during the transition. Steep terrain, cliffs, and narrow drainages can funnel and concentrate wind into a consistent direction even when the broader pattern is in flux, which is worth factoring into where you actually sit during that changeover window.
This is the one piece of hunting folklore worth actually pushing back on. Barometric pressure gets more airtime around camp than almost any other weather variable, but the rigorous research doesn’t back up the confidence hunters put in it. The Mississippi State University Deer Ecology and Management Lab tracked collared deer across a large study area and found, in the words of lead researcher Dr. Bronson Strickland, only subtle changes tied to weather fronts, nothing close to the dramatic movement spikes hunting lore predicts. A summary from the National Deer Association puts it plainly: temperature had a measurable effect on movement, while barometric pressure, precipitation, and moon phase did not show a notable impact in that dataset.
That research is on white-tailed deer, not elk specifically, elk-specific barometric research is thin on the ground, but deer and elk share enough behavioral ecology as cervids that it’s the closest rigorous evidence available, and it’s honest to say so rather than pretend elk-specific proof exists when it doesn’t. The practical takeaway: don’t let a falling barometer talk you out of a good stand based on temperature and wind alone. Pressure alone isn’t carrying the weight hunting culture has given it.
Here’s a finding that runs against what most hunters assume, and it comes from research done right here in Oregon. The Starkey Experimental Forest and Range, a US Forest Service research station in the Blue Mountains near La Grande, has run one of the longest continuous elk research programs in the country. In controlled studies conducted from 1991 to 1995 and detailed in the Forest Service’s own Starkey Project publication, researchers found no measurable benefit from thermal cover for elk in either winter or summer. More strikingly, elk held in dense timber stands during winter actually lost more weight than elk held in clearcuts.
This doesn’t mean cover is irrelevant, elk clearly use it for security from predators and hunters, but it complicates the assumption that dense timber is a thermal refuge elk are seeking out purely to manage temperature. The Starkey data suggests elk selecting heavy cover in hot weather may be balancing security and disturbance avoidance as much as, or more than, temperature regulation itself. Zoom out from day-to-day movement and weather still runs the show, just on a longer timeline. Research from the Wyoming Migration Initiative and a 2025 study in Scientific Reports on spring migration phenology in Rocky Mountain elk both point to snowpack and vegetation green-up as the major drivers of when elk herds shift between winter and summer range. That’s a spring story more than a September one, by archery season, most herds have already settled into late-summer range and the big seasonal migrations aren’t the active variable. But it’s useful context: the elk in front of you during archery season got there because of a weather-driven decision made months earlier, they’re not on that hillside by accident.
The best available research, conducted on white-tailed deer rather than elk specifically, found no notable correlation between barometric pressure and movement. Temperature had a far more measurable effect in the same studies.
